8 Great Movies for Road Sisters

Looking for some awesome movies starring rad women behind the wheel?  Is there someone on your gift list who’s a real road sister, ready to hit the road at a moment’s notice, seeking out a new adventure? Maybe you could use a girl’s night in, a bucket of popcorn and a little best friend bonding time?

Below are some movies all available on DVD that make great gifts for the road sisters in your life or are perfect for when you just want to treat yourself to a little “rest stop.”

• Boys on the Side (1995)

Starring: Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore

This film is guaranteed to put a smile in your heart and a lump in your throat as the trio hit the road.  All three women have their own stories to share one is a lesbian, another suffers from AIDS and one is desperately trying to run from her past.

• Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Nicolas Cage, Giovanni Ribisi

Sway (Angelina Jolie) is the only woman who can keep up with the boys in this fast paced action film about boosting cars and family ties.

• Death Proof (2007)

Starring: Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell and Kurt Russell

One of my very favorite films, this one is gritty, grimy, fun and with usual Tarantino flair, one movie that just doesn’t pull any punches.  Lots of non-stop action as the girls take to the road, turning the tables and seeking revenge.   Lots of awesome car chases, special effects and unbelievable maneuvers make this a must see - especially if you like your movies fast paced and fearless.

• American Graffiti (1973)

Starring: Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Candy Clark, Ron Howard, Paul LeMat and Richard Dreyfuss

This is one of the very few films which takes us back to the 1960’s and isn’t afraid to feature girls who really like cars, crusin’, racing and having a great time.  Who can forget Mackenzie Phillips as she cruises the strip with a much older Paul LeMat, Candy Clark’s fascination with the tuck-roll technique or Suzanne Somers as the mysterious woman in the T-Bird?

• Thelma & Louise (1991)

Starring: Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon

Probably the best chick-buddy film ever made. One day, Thelma and Louise (Davis and Sarandon) hit the road, taking a remarkable journey that changes their lives forever and yes, they meet a very young and super sexy drifter, who we know now as Brad Pitt along the way.   This is a film that’s really too good to miss.

• Heart Like a Wheel (1983)

Starring: Bonnie Bedelia

This is one of my favorite films, a true-life account of the First Woman of Drag Racing, Shirley Muldowney, who was the first woman to receive a license to drive a top fuel dragster by the NHRA. She won the NHRA Top Fuel championship in 1977, 1980 and 1982. In 2008, ESPN ranked her 21st on their top drivers of all-time, citing her record as the first woman to win a major racing championship.

• Fast and the Furious (2001)

Starring: Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker

Taking us inside street racing, reportedly this film was based on an article which appeared in a magazine featuring street club racers who get their kicks by racing Japanese cars in the wee hours.  While I’m a huge fan of the film and can barely wait for the sequel in 2009, I’m also a big fan of Letty’s (Rodriguez) street edge.  This is one film which shows women (Brewster and Rodriguez) taking the turns and squealing the tires just as well as their male co-stars.  The only downfall is that I’d like to see both women take an even more active role behind the wheel.

• Herbie Fully Loaded (2005)

Starring: Lindsay Lohan, Justin Long, Michael Keaton, Matt Dillon and Breckin Meyer

This is a cute movie that’s great for girls of almost any age.  Maggie Peyton (Lohan), who owns Number 53, Herbie the VW with a mind of his own, gets him on the road to become a NASCAR competitor.

Cars for Girls was created to educate and empower women. We want to eliminate the mystery, and hopefully the fears that women may have regarding all aspects of the automobile industry.
