A Word to the Wise on Tailgating

speed limit sign
On my way to work this morning, I was mixed in with the flow of traffic, like I typically am.  However, today I had the pleasure of someone riding my bumper despite the fact that I obviously could not go any faster since there was another car in front of me.  This got me thinking about how I can curb tailgaters.  If you’re like me, then here are a few thoughts on how to get rid of the people riding your tail on the road!

First, try to keep calm.  As frustrating and annoying as it is, you can’t react to other drivers.  Simply stay focused on the situation and do not feel forced to speed up.  If you’re driving the posted speed limit, you shouldn’t have to break the law to avoid someone following you too closely.

Second, if possible, change lanes to the right and let the person go by.  Personally, more times than not, I know I would prefer to slam on my brakes just to make a point.  However, I also know this is the most unsafe way to avoid being tailgated!

Third, don’t be the cause of tailgating and don’t do it yourself!  In many states, it’s actually illegal now to travel in the left lane if you’re not passing.   If you’re traveling, stick to the right lane unless you have to pass.  This gives people less reason to tailgate you because they can pass if they’d like.  And, of course, don’t tailgate other people while you’re driving.  We all know how irritating this can be, but don’t tailgate in return if another driver has just made you a victim of it yourself.

Lastly, if you’re feeling extremely proactive, keep a cell phone or camera with you at all times while you’re driving.  When you have someone following you too closely, pull out your camera.  I bet you’d be surprised at how many people actually get scared by this and discontinue riding your bumper!  That or slap on a bumper sticker letting other drivers how you feel about tailgaters!
