How To Keep Your Car Looking Brand New
The other day, I gave some tips on interior cleaning and how to keep our vehicles looking great, so today I thought I’d offer up a few ways to keep our vehicles looking brand new.
Our vehicles are truly an investment; we work hard to be able to drive what we own and taking pride in our rides can help keep the resale value up, help curb repair costs and help us to get the most from our vehicle when we sell it or trade it a few years down the road. Our vehicle is often the face we show our co-workers, neighbors and friends, so when our vehicle looks good on the outside, it leaves a good impression on us.
Here are some useful tips that will help you keep your car looking new:
Wash Your Car Frequently
This is probably the most obvious tip, but one many people take for granted. The important thing is to make sure your car is washed thoroughly and whether you do it yourself or go to an automatic car wash facility, pay special attention to removing any grime, dirt, salt and other corrosion-causing deposits. If washing by hand, use a good car wash soap and invest in a mitt that wont scratch. If you can swing it, I suggest washing your car at least once a week, but once every two weeks is okay, too.
Things like tar and tree sap can harden to the finish over time, faster in hotter seasons or warmer areas. Auto parts and department stores stock cleaning solutions which are specially formulated to remove these deposits. When drying, use high quality towels and try to avoid any towels that leave lint or bits behind. I like micro-fiber towels best because they don’t leave anything behind. A good tire cleaner also goes a long way.
Wax
You don’t need to wax your car after every wash; in fact, I recommend that you only wax a few times each year; preferably just before winter and again just before or just after spring. Waxing protects the finish from the elements. A good rule of thumb is when the water stops beading on your vehicle, it’s time for a new coat of wax.
Don’t Park in the Sun
Parking your car in the sun for long periods can mean a fading finish and can make the paint more vulnerable to peeling, chipping and scratching.
Be Aware of Parking Lots
If you have to park in a parking lot or parking garage, take a good look at who your parking neighbors will be and choose a spot that’s next to other vehicles which look to be in great or very good condition. Parking next to a beater or a car with heavy damage may be asking for door dings. Avoid parking in compact only spaces since they leave very little wiggle room.
Don’t Place Items on the Hood or Roof
Don’t place items on the hood, trunk or the roof of your car when loading up or unpacking. Things like car seats, grocery bags, suitcases, etc. can really scratch up the finish.
Maintain Regularly or On Schedule
It goes without saying that oil changes, checking fluid levels, getting new tires when needed, replacing hoses and belts before they break or wear out and keeping on a regular maintenance schedule will help maintain the life of our car and keep it running in tip-top shape.

*Guilty* I haven’t washed my girls in a while… They definitely need a bath and a coat of wax each! Then maybe I’ll give them some love and post their pics on my blog… For as much as I rave about them, I haven’t shown them off any either.
