How to Replace Your Rear View Mirror
Typically older vehicles have their rear view mirror mounted on the windshield. However, after time, they have a tendency to fall off due to rough handling or lack of effectiveness from the adhesive. If yours has come off, here’s the best way to replace it.
The first and most crucial step is to remove any remaining amounts of old adhesive from the windshield. You can use glue remover or use a razor blade. Personally I would use both just to be sure all small pieces are removed.
Once the entire area is free of adhesive, you’ll want to clean the area with window cleaner so that any dirt or old glue has been wiped away.
After you have successfully cleaned the windshield, you’ll want to remove the actual mirror from the mirror plate. It’s a small metal piece that the mirror slides onto so that it’s able to be attached to the windshield. Determine the place where you need to mount the mirror plate, place a small amount of adhesive on it the mount it to the appropriate spot. This type of adhesive can be purchased at any local auto parts store and will come with instructions on the back as well.
Hold the mirror plate in place until it no longer moves. Let the adhesive sit for the amount of time as instructed on the package it was purchased it. Once it has dried, place the mirror on the plate. There will also be a small screw near the base of the mirror. You’ll want to gently tighten it until the mirror no longer moves.
If you’re unsure about what type of adhesive to purchase, look for a “mirror adhesive kit” or ask an employee for assistance.
