Make the Most of Your Test Drive
If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, of course you’re planning on test driving it. But, have you ever given much thought to the items you should pay extra attention to while you’re out on the road? If not, then here are a few tips to make the most of your test drive time.
Test the brakes. Are there any noises when you apply the brakes? Do they feel like they work properly and smoothly? It’s important to have the seller address the issue before you purchase the vehicle, if so.
Make sure the transmission shifts properly. Regardless of whether it’s a manual or automatic transmission, you should listen to and feel the gear box. Be sure the gears shift smoothly and there are no alarming noises.
Check the steering. While you’re out on the road, make sure you not only drive on the highway, but also in town where you’re able to change lanes and turn. You want to be positive that there are no steering column or parts issues.
Test the vehicle’s accessories and controls. While you’re out, make sure you check all the switches and controls for windows, air conditioning, sun roof, vents, etc. Although you may believe it’s just a knob that’s the problem, it could be a much more costly repair.
Be sure the vehicle is comfortable. If you’re driving it every day, you want to be comfortable. Make sure you have amble visibility, the suspension offers a smooth ride and that you feel safe and at ease sitting in the driver’s seat.

And always ALWAYS have a pre-purchase inspection done by a shop you trust. You will pay for the inspection, but it will save you money in the long run.
