Now is the Best Time to Buy a Car – Part 2
Kelly Blue Book and look up the Honda under used cars to find the trade in value. Type in the make, model, year and mileage, and then rate the car in excellent condition. Now we have a guide as to the wholesale value of that car.
I realize the Accord has different levels of equipment in 2006. Pick what is important to you, such as leather seats or the faster engine. Now armed with the knowledge of what the cars cash value is (wholesale value) lets see what pre-owned Hondas are available.
If you visit Honda’s main website you can get a list of Honda dealers in your area. Check out their websites and see what pre-owned inventory they have and what prices they are asking. Look for the car with the least amount of miles in the best condition.
Visit the dealership and ask to test drive the car. If you don’t know anybody to ask for in sales you can call ahead and ask the phone receptionist to recommend a salesperson he or she would send a family member to.
Now lets say you’ve driven the car and like it. It’s time to sit down and go over the numbers.
It doesn’t matter what they are asking for the car. What matters is what they are willing to sell the car for. Where will we end up? You want to offer them a thousand dollars over the price you got from Kelly Blue Book and tell them you are a buyer at that price.
They will probably try and push you a little on the price. It’s okay to be a little flexible depending on how much more than your offer they want. If you are five or six hundred dollars apart you can say yes and buy the car or you can get up and leave and hold out for your offer.
If you end up holding out one of two things will happen. They will either call you later and accept your offer or they will try and convince you to spend the extra money that they had asked for. If they don’t accept your offer it’s usually because the dealership owns that car for more than the book value, either because of the low miles or the condition of the car. If the lowest they are willing to go on the last day of the month is a few hundred dollars apart from where you wanted to be it’s still okay to say yes. You’ve gotten a great deal.
