Junior Drag Racer Wins ‘Our Everyday Heroes’ Race Car Design Contest; Designs Funny Car for Pro Driver

Libby Ledford is her parents’ hero. The 11-year-old carries an adult’s load of responsibilities with an extraordinary dedication. Hers isn’t the face of a victim. Libby walks with courage.

The 5-foot-4, four-sport athlete was born into a drag racing family. In 2012, she won a track championship behind the wheel of the junior dragster her father Jeff built for her at their family-owned track – not long after she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Her career-best E.T. is 8.90 seconds, the quickest a driver in her age group can go.

Libby’s mother Denise describes her daughter as a strong girl with good character. This year at school, Libby earned the Principal’s Award at Central Montcalm Upper Elementary – the only student to receive the honor.

She accepted that award not long before receiving another; Libby won the fifth-annual “Our Everyday Heroes” Race Car Design Contest, hosted by Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD), its brands Motorcraft and Quick Lane, and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the global leader in T1D research.

Children with T1D from around the nation submitted their patriotic race car designs in the hopes they would see their artwork on the NHRA Full Throttle Series Funny Car driven by professional Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III. Libby’s design was chosen from the top 10 finalists.

Libby and her family watched her car make it all the way to the semifinals at the NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio July 8, 2012, as guests of Tasca and Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing. The NHRA Full Throttle Series competes with a bracket-style elimination race format.

“There’s so much to be pleased with about the results of this year’s contest,” said Mary Lou Quesnell, Director of Marketing, FCSD. “Libby’s design is fantastic and really captures what we hoped it would – that pride we have in our everyday heroes, from members of the military to fire and police personnel to those who manage their T1D every day.”

In five years, the race car design contest has raised approximately $275,000.

“I was in shock (when we found out she won),” Denise said. “But so happy and so excited. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. She’s such a great role model.”

“All of us at JDRF are proud of Libby, not just for creating this winning race car design, but also for following her passion of racing while managing a very difficult disease,” said Mania Boyder, JDRF’s executive vice president, development. “I am sure Libby is excited by the idea that her passion is helping to fund another area of great importance to her: research to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes.”

In T1D, the body’s pancreas stops producing enough insulin, a hormone that is needed to turn food into energy. People with T1D must currently monitor their blood sugar levels and administer insulin via shots or an insulin pump, multiple times every day. Even vigilant management does not ward against T1D complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation. JDRF is the largest charitable funder of research toward preventing, better treating, and curing T1D and its complications.

Ford Motor Company is the largest global sponsor of JDRF, with almost $40 million raised through various efforts since 1998. This year’s race car design contest hosted by FCSD raised $24,819. Every child who entered raised money for JDRF by asking their friends and family to “vote” through donations toward research that will hopefully unearth a cure for T1D. Libby raised $1,915 for the cause.

“Made In” America More Important To Car Shoppers Than “Made By” U.S. Manufacturer

With Independence Day this week, Americans celebrated their love of country with family and friends, picnics and cookouts and grand fireworks displays. But patriotism runs deeper than that, particularly for those car shoppers whose love of country plays a big role in which vehicle they decide to purchase. According to the July edition of the Shopper Insights Report from the AutoTrader.com Trend Engine, 41 percent of car shoppers recently surveyed say that it is important to purchase a vehicle built in the U.S. by U.S. workers, versus 28 percent who say it is important to purchase a vehicle made by a U.S. automaker.

The top three reasons shoppers say that it is important to purchase a vehicle that is physically “Made in America” are: Protects American jobs (78 percent), Supports the American economy (74 percent) and Keeps American dollars at home (62 percent).

“There’s no doubt that buying American products supports the U.S. economy, but ‘Made in the U.S.’ doesn’t have to mean ‘made by’ a U.S. manufacturer,” said Rick Wainschel, vice president of automotive insights at AutoTrader.com. “With the global nature of the auto industry, many vehicles from foreign automakers are manufactured right here in the U.S., enabling car shoppers to feel that they are still supporting the U.S. economy and job creation for American workers.”

Further, the survey revealed that while “American made” is generally seen by consumers as a car made in the U.S. by a U.S. automaker, a vehicle that is made in the U.S. by a foreign automaker is more likely to be seen as “American made” (57 percent) than one from a U.S. automaker that was built outside the U.S. (43 percent).

Top Vehicles Made in the U.S.

There are several great cars made by both foreign and domestic automakers that are manufactured right here in the U.S., so the experts at AutoTrader.com offered up a list of their favorites: five with U.S. nameplates and five with foreign nameplates.

Top Five Vehicles Made in the U.S. by U.S. Manufacturers

  • 2013 Chevrolet Malibu (Detroit, MI): The 2013 Chevy Malibu may be larger than its predecessor, but its Eco model is almost more fuel efficient than ever.  The Malibu Eco gets and EPA estimated 25 mpg in the city, 37 on the highway and 29 mpg in combined driving. Plus, the combination of Chevrolet MyLink Touch and OnStar turn the Malibu into a mobile concierge for the on-the-go family. The Malibu is also much nicer inside than previous versions with good quality materials and an upscale look.
  • 2013 Ford Escape (Louisville, KY):  The Ford Escape has been completely redesigned and reengineered for 2013.  In place of the old tank-like design and disappointing powertrain is a sleek, technology-filled crossover with a peppy turbocharged four-cylinder engine.  If you’re in the market for a mid-sized crossover, the Escape might just be the benchmark for success.
  • 2013 Dodge Dart (Belvidere, IL): The Dodge Dart comes as a result of the recent Chrysler/FIAT marriage.  Under its American sheet metal, the Dart is actually based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.  If you’re looking for a small, practical sedan with a distinctly European driving flavor, the Dart might just be the car for you.
  • 2013 SRT Viper (Detroit, MI): The Japanese have the LFA, the Germans have the R8 and the Italians have the 458 Italia, but let’s not forget that the SRT Viper has been reborn for 2013, too.  As the only true supercar bred and built in the United States, the Viper is part muscle car and part racing machine.  And, oh, that exhaust note coming from the 8.4-liter V10 makes gets our heart pumping every time.
  • 2013 Buick Enclave (Lansing, MI): With its plush interior, moderate pricing and seating for up to eight passengers, the Buick Enclave is an affordable way to put a full-size luxury SUV in your driveway.  Plus, the 2013 model gets an updated design and technologies to wow your family with.

Top Five Vehicles Made in the U.S. by Foreign Manufacturers

  • 2012 Volkswagen Passat (Chattanooga, TN): The 2012 VW Passat is perhaps the most comfortable and most affordable family sedan on the market today.  Built in Chattanooga, the Passat also comes with three interesting engine choices: the 2.5-liter five-cylinder, a 3.6-liter VR6 and our personal favorite, the 2.0-liter turbocharged clean diesel.
  • 2012 Kia Optima (West Point, GA): The Kia Optima is a game-changer for the family sedan market.  For less than $30,000, the Optima includes a peaky turbocharger, leather-heated seats for both front seat and rear seat passengers and a gorgeous panoramic glass roof.  Plus, there’s enough legroom to comfortably seat five adults.
  • 2012 BMW X3 (Spartanburg, SC): The BMW X3 drives like a sport sedan, but has the ground clearance to do moderate off-road duty as well.  If you’re looking for a comfortable crossover with fun driving dynamics, this one has an added boost of presence that comes with owning a BMW.  What you might not realize is that every X3 is built locally in Spartanburg, SC, so even the Germans who buy one import their cars from the US.
  • 2012 Honda Odyssey (Lincoln, AL): While the Odyssey has swelled to the size of what used to be considered a full-size van, it comes with the comfort and technology suited for a private jet.  Its wide-screen rear-seat entertainment system has the ability to keep two rows of kids quiet, and that’s something that any parent can appreciate.
  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class (Tuscaloosa, AL): Redesigned for 2012, the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class can play both roles of competent off-pavement vehicle or luxurious family cruiser.  Quilted leather and an updated navigation and entertainment system meet all-wheel drive capability.  Plus, it’s built in Alabama, so you can enjoy German engineering while supporting American jobs.

AutoLoans.com Unveils New Look, Enhanced Vehicle Financing Tools

Vehicle financing resource www.autoloans.com has unveiled a new site layout in time for the summer car buying season. The new design highlights the interactive budgeting calculators and daily local interest rate information, according to AutoLoans.com spokesperson Mike Ronson.

“The new site maintains all of the useful features our users have come to associate with the AutoLoans.com experience while enjoying the benefits of a more aesthetically pleasing and resourceful layout,” Ronson said. “This site refresh highlights the importance of consumer feedback and effective social media interaction.”

The new AutoLoans.com was revealed at the same time favorable auto sales figures began to surface. MSNBC.com reports strong consumer demand has driven domestic summer auto sales higher. Ronson claims the new site design benefits from enhanced usability and better serves the needs of consumers. Prospective car buyers can filter interest rates and information by new car and used car financing while current vehicle owners are able to browse rates and apply for refinancing in order to reduce monthly payments or loan amounts.

The AutoLoans.com toolset includes monthly payment and pricing calculators that enable prospective buyers to set budgets and determine affordability. Additionally, users can compare current financing rates or apply for a loan directly through the site.

“We received a lot of consumer feedback following the release of our Car Calc iPhone and iPad app,” Ronson said. “We used this feedback to make the site not only more efficient and streamlined but also more targeted to consumers who are ready to purchase or refinance. Now the exact same features are available on the main site and the mobile app.”

The AutoLoans.com Car Calc version 1.0.0 app was released in April to rave reviews and features two financial calculators, a real-time local interest rate comparison and the ability to apply directly for a loan using a secure mobile form. The free app is currently available in the iTunes App Store.

Off the Wall Auto News: Nissan LEAF Breaks Record at Festival of Speed

The multiple award-winning Nissan LEAF rewrote the record books this weekend. The Nissan LEAF has set a record as the fastest car over a measured mile (1.6km) in reverse.

Driven by professional stunt driver Terry Grant, the Nissan LEAF raced backwards up the famous Goodwood hillclimb course at the weekend’s Festival of Speed, covering the distance in 1m 37.02s at an average speed of 88.5km/h (55 mph).

Having set the record on Friday, the opening day of the Festival, Terry went on to smash his time on Saturday and Sunday, shaving an amazing 26 seconds off Friday’s time.

Terry, who set a world record at last year’s festival by driving a Nissan Juke up the hill on two wheels, says: “I had a great car at my disposal – with direct drive from the electric motor to its wheels, the Nissan LEAF can, in theory, go as fast backwards as it can forwards There were times I wasn’t sure I was coming or going. However, thanks to the LEAF’s low centre of gravity – the batteries are an integral part of the car’s floor – the car is extremely stable, no matter which direction it’s traveling.

“The only complaint I have is slight neck ache from constantly looking over my shoulder!”

The LEAF Reverse Record is part of Nissan’s ambitious social media-driven campaign, ‘The Big Turn On’, which is spreading the EV message across Europe using social media channels and aimed to get one million consumers switched onto electric driving, in just 100 days. The one million ‘turn ons’ target was achieved on the 21st June, 15 days ahead of the original target.

The Nissan LEAF Reverse Record was just one of a number of Nissan highlights at the Festival. The dramatic race-prepared Nissan LEAF NISMO RC raced against the clock (and in the correct direction) to set a hill record for electric vehicles. It was driven by current FIA GT1 world champion Michael Krumm, who also drove his 540hp GT-R GT1 racer up the hill. The newest production GT-R Track Pack took part in the Supercar Run, while the stunning Juke-R – a GT-R in Juke’s clothes – also wowed the crowds.

And sticking with the Juke theme, Festival go-ers were treated to a sneak preview of the Juke Nismo, a hot crossover created by Nissan’s performance arm, which reaches the showrooms in early 2013.
