We had a 1998 Subaru Forester until this past weekend when the car was totaled in a roll over accident. My husband avoided a person who was (we were told by witnesses) backing up on the highway, no shoulder (perhaps a missed exit). There was no where to go and not hit other cars as others ahead of us had to quickly avoid that car also. Our car could not recover and we drove off the road. We were driving approx. 52 to 55 miles per hour and we had our seat belts on. The car hit a low curb at an angle and went into a roll over. It rolled twice we were told. We hit a smallish highway sign. The roof held up. We survived without injury. Our pet was in the car, in her box, and she also survived. We are so grateful to survive and to have been in a Subaru Forester. The car was wrecked but the cabin of the car did not fall apart. God graced us with life but our decision to drive a Subaru, wear seat belts and drive at lower speeds (to avoid hitting deer) really factored into survival. I hope more people will consider driving slower. Speeding usually only gets you to your destination in five or ten minutes sooner, for a long drive maybe you save a half hour. Really I see now that the danger outweighs the benifits of speeding. We changed our driving speed from 65 to 55 after reading safety reports that say studies have been done indicating that it is much easier to avoid a deer on the road at 55 vs. 65mph. There are deer everywhere in the areas that we frequently drive. Happy and safe driving to all. We plan to get another Subaru.

I think I prioritize car safety as much as I do it's green factor. Not that I'm anticipating any rollover crashes soon, but the top 4 SUVs with tough roofs seem like a good investment to me.
