Testing Your E-Brake

Although most people probably don’t think about testing their emergency brake, it’s crucial to know that it’s functioning properly in case an actual emergency occurs and it’s needed.  Here are two tests in order to make sure your e-brake is working correctly.  It’s best to perform the more in depth test now that way you can perform the quick test regularly in the future.

Step 1

Loosen the tire lug nuts for the tires where your brakes are located (either the front or the back).  Raise that end of the car up using a lift or jack stands.  You can also slide car ramps under the tires once it’s been lifted, thus adding more stability and security.

Step 2

Finish removing the tires from the appropriate end of the vehicle.

Step 3

Once the tires have been removed, you should be able to see the brake pads or drums fairly easily.  Have another person reach into your car and engage the e-brake.  Once it’s engaged, you should see either the drums or pads move. If there is no movement, the emergency brake connections may need to be adjusted.

Step 4

Replace and reconnect each of the tires that you’ve removed and lower your car back to the ground.

Quick Test

Find a hill that has at least some type of slope to it.  Stop the car at the top of the slope and place it in neutral.  If your car does not immediately begin to roll, you may have to put it into gear just enough to get movement.

Once the car begins get to move, immediately engage the e-brake.  Your car should stop abruptly.  If it does not, then use the regular foot brake to stop it.  This also means you may need to perform the more in depth test or visit with a mechanic about adjusting the connections.

It’s always a wise idea to have another person with you for assistance, and of course proceed with caution when performing any DIY maintenance.
