The Basics of Car Alarms
Even though most vehicles today come with some type of security system, it may not be enough for your preference. So, if you’re in the market for a car alarm, there are five main types to look for when you’re shopping. Here are the basics of alarms to make your research a little easier.
Passive car alarm. This is the type of alarm that’s typically already installed on a new car when you purchase it. It doesn’t have to be activated and simply protects you once you turn off your engine and lock your door. Often times your key will come equipped with a microchip that disables the system if the key is inserted into the lock.
Active car alarm. This type of alarm is the opposite of a passive alarm. You have to activate the system when you lock your doors and leave your vehicle. It gives you complete control as to when you want to activate it, however the down side is that you have to remember every time you want it armed.
Silent car alarm. Instead of making loud noise if it’s set off, this type of alarm transmits an electronic signal to a device you keep with you. Some drivers prefer this type because it draws less attention in the case of a false alarm. However, it would not deter a thief or alert anyone near your vehicle if it goes off.
Factory alarm. This type of alarm is comes installed on your car because it happens during the production process. There are a wide variety of factory alarms ranging from ones that turn off and on when you put your key into the ignition to ones that activate once you close and lock your doors. Most of the time, your keyless remote comes with a button to activate the alarm as well. Most times you can have this type of already existing alarm modified. The one downfall to this type of alarm is that many times it’s hard to activate using the remote unless you’re in close proximity to your vehicle.
After-market alarm. You can purchase many varieties of aftermarket alarms from an auto shop or a store like Best Buy. They can be inexpensive or cost thousands of dollars, depending on what you’re looking for and how much security you want. Typically the less expensive, the less protection is offered by the system.
If you can’t decide what type of system you need, then make a list of features you’d like in an alarm. Talk with your dealer, mechanic or even an employee at a retail store where alarm systems are sold. You can even search the Internet for reviews and systems that may appeal to you.
