Top 10 Most Hard To Get Cars This Holiday Season

Did you give or get a new car for Christmas? According to Forbes, although the economy is sluggish and the auto industry is in dire need of a jump start, many people still bought gifts with four wheels either for themselves or for others this holiday season.

In fact, some cars on Santa’s list were in such high demand that those lucky enough to find them snatched them up almost immediately.  The demand for certain makes and models has been so high that buyers didn’t hesitate to make a purchase when they were finally able to find them.  Forbes says that some cars were only available in certain styles or trims, while others haven’t been available at local showrooms at all and sadly, only one car that was popular enough to make the list came from an American automaker the Dodge Challenger, from Chrysler.

So which made Santa’s list of the hardest cars to get for the holidays this year?  The results are in:

10. Scion xD (Base MSRP:  $14,650.00)
9. Audi S6 (Base MSRP:  $72,350.00)
8. Dodge Challenger (Base MSRP:  $21,820.00)
7. Nissan GT-R (Base MSRP:  $76,840.00)
6. Toyota Prius (Base MSRP:  $22,000.00)
5. BMW X6 (Base MSRP:  $55,500.00)
4. Honda Fit (Base MSRP:  $14,550.00)
3. Audi S5 (Base MSRP:  $40,700.00)
2. Audi R8 (Base MSRP:   $114,200.00)
1. MINI Cooper (Base MSRP:  $18,550.00)

To compile the list, Forbes used November 2008 day-supply data as a measure of dealer inventory levels. They also took into account retail turn rates – the amount of time a car spends on the lot – provided by J.D. Power and Associates. Taken together, those two factors show which vehicles are the toughest to buy: A low day’s supply and low retail turn rate mean a dealership may have sold out of a vehicle, have only a few on the lot or may not have many options for style or trim.

I was surprised that the MINI Cooper topped the list.  I was sure it was going to be the new Ford Mustang, which didn’t even win, place or show.

What do Cars for Girls readers think any surprises here?

  1. Days supply figures have been very volatile this year. Small cars that were in short supply a few months ago are now having trouble finding buyers.
