Zipcar On Demand

When I first read about the Zipcar sharing program, which is currently available at some of the country’s top universities, I thought it was a genius idea – and then I wondered what took so long!

For those like me, who had never heard of the Zipcar sharing program, essentially the purpose is to offer “on demand” transportation for college students who may not have a vehicle of their own, but who need occasional transportation without the added worry and expense of fill-ups at the pump, auto insurance and maintenance, and with many models to choose from, there’s a vehicle for every taste and need – from trekking down to the beach for a well deserved weekend get-away with friends and visiting family, to a day filled with interviews or must-do errands.  Another advantage to the program is that vehicles can be reserved either months in advance, or on the same day the vehicle is needed.

The Zipcar program, which currently has over 200,000 members and over 5,000 vehicles on college campuses in 27 states (as well as in London, England), offer more than 30 automobile makes and models, which can be rented by the hour or per day.  What makes the Zipcar program so attractive is that it allows members to pay an annual fee of only $35.00 per year, with the ability to reserve vehicles online or by phone, for a fee of $8.00 per hour - which includes gasoline and insurance.  The Zipcar program comes complete with a fuel card, which is located in every vehicle, for easy fill-up, which is included at no extra cost.  Another added bonus is there are no keys to pick up or pages of paperwork to fill out.  Just sign up and complete the membership application on line, get your Zipcard – and you’re on your way!

Unlike car rental companies, Zipcar is self-service, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, so there are no long lines, no extra fees for drivers under 25 and Zipcar is available to everyone – not just college students!

Insurance is also provided and consists of a combined single limit of $300,000.00 per accident; so all third party bodily injuries, or property damage costs relating to the accident are covered up to $300,000.00.

Drivers must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s license for at least 12 months.

  1. I used ZipCar when I was in SF and it was perfect for me. Parking a car and owning a vehicle in cities can be inconvenient and expensive. Programs like ZipCar, FlexCar and CityCarShare are affordable and ecological alternatives. I only really ever used or needed the vehicles once or twice a month.

  2. Hi Reggie: I’m so happy you stopped by! :)

I’m glad Zipcar has worked out well for you and you’re right; programs like Zipcar are indeed ecologically sound alternatives.

  3. [...] While I was away, I spent some time with my daughter who goes to college, and found myself thinking about how many colleges there are in my area.
